Today was the first day of the Sonoma County Fair. Everyone who entered before 3:00 pm got in for free. Our cheap asses were all over that, so we geared down with lots of water, sunscreen and visors and made the 5 minute drive to the fair. As expected it was HOT! As soon as we walked in the building, the kids were jumping all over the place to go on rides. Sheesh! Could ya' wait 2 minutes? Nope. Apparently not. We let Alysia and her friend Rosemary take off by themselves after giving them the rules to fair survival 101. Next, we went to kiddie land to buy the bracelets that would get the kids (Kyra and Cole) and Kent on all the rides without having to buy endless and expensive tickets. The kids made a few rounds on some rides and then were turned away from the Catepillar coaster for being too tall! Oh oh. Sad times ahead that our little ones are growing out of the kiddie land. We next made our way to the Silver Zapper.
The next choice was to ride in the tummy of some bears and spin around, so while we found some limited shade, the kids went on the ride. As they got off the ride and walked across the way to the next, I noticed a little boy had passed out from the heat and the fair medics were attending to him. I mentioned it to Kent (who just that morning watched a news piece on the heat and dehydration) and he immediately walked over to him with our spray bottle and fan that we bought last year at Disneyland. He stayed with the little guy and his mom, keeping him cool with the fan and periodics sprays of water. After about 15 minutes, the little one was able to get up and his mom thanked Kent and she carried him out to the front to meet her mother, who was a nurse, and off to the hospital they went. Meanwhile, the fair medics got a call that a woman's water broke over by the food alley and off they went.
After that we decided we needed a break from the sun and ventured into one of our fair favorites, The Hall of Flowers. One of my former cheerleaders had a space to design and we were really excited to see she had won first place! Her dad's landscaping company won the Best of Show, which is the top prize.
Our next stop was into visit the vendors. We did really well this year, ignoring all the sales pitches telling us why we NEEDED one contraption or the other. On our way out of the hall, Kent excitedly points out our local celebrity Guy Fieri! Guy was the winner of The Next Food Network Star. We both love that a local guy won the competition, but were even more excited that the food he makes looks easy and is something that we WANT to eat. Kent LOVES Rachel Ray, but even her 30-minute meals are bit too bunny foo foo for our tastes.
Kent told Guy he was his "idol". Guy asked Kent if he cooks and Kent told him he dabbled in it. Dabbled? Please..........Kent is the chef in our home but he was too shy to tell him. Awwww.Our next stop was to eat. But what to eat was the question. Lisa and I decided we were not eating anything healthy like we did last year. I grabbed some corn dogs, she got pizza. The kids had the same. Kent ate some chili cheese fries and a corn dog. Of course, we have now refilled our water supplies a dozen times because of the heat. Alysia caught up with us and decided to chow down on a turkey leg as big as her arm. The heat got to her just before her first bite and she literally had a bit of a melt down before recharging with water.
After a few more rides and more water, we decided to leave and head to the pool where we spent the next two hours cooling off. The kids were insane and tried to talk us into going back in the evening, but the parental units were burned out! We opted for home and ordered in Pizza. Until next year......Good bye fair!
