Talent Show

Tonight was the St. Luke's Talent Show. The last time the girls performed in it was when Kyra was in Kindergarten. This year we were available and Kyra wanted to do a dance from her Mexican dance class called "La Picota". We recruited Kelly and Haley and these girls picked up the dance beautifully. Kyra had been teaching them on the side in November, so by the time I had them for practice in late January, they had half the dance down.

"La Picota" is a style of dance from the highland region of Tamaulipas, principally from Villa de San Carlos. The dance was originally a ritual dance of the most ancient inhabitants of Tamaulipas, the Mayas. The music is played with a clarinet and drum, which awakens the spirit of the dancers. With high jump steps, turns and sudden shifts, as well as cotton costumes the dancers combine the Indigenous and Spanish characteristics in a joyous celebration.
